Lohgad Fort

Lohagad Fort, literally meaning iron fort, is a historical citadel perched atop a hillock at an elevation of 3400 feet. Situated in the Sahyadri range of Lonavala, it separates the Indrayani basin from the Pawna basin. The elaborate history of this fort associates it with the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Many other Maratha and Vidarbha rulers used this citadel, making it an important part of Maharashtra's rich history.

The actual date of original fort is not clearly known but the known records points out some additional constructions such as a step well and big tank during eighteenth century. The ancient fort's four mammoth gates are still intact and are in good condition. Bhaja caves(Khandala)

Bhaja Caves are amongst the most ancient Buddhist centers in this part of the world. They are over 2200 years old. The 22 rock-cut caves at the hill top represent the astonishing architectural skills possessed by the craftsmen of the past. Visit the caves in the evenings to have a perfect photo session. Since the caves face the west, you can have a great view of the caves after 3.00 pm and to photograph the caves when the sunlight beams on would add a mesmerizing effect. Believed to be the oldest Buddhist religious site in the county, it is declared as the national monument. The main attraction of the place is the 22 rock-cut caves which depict various sculptures, like that of a prince in a chariot, a prince seated on an elephant, among others and dancing couples. All these sculptures are the specimen of Indian architectural age and the mastery in sculpturing. The first cave is believed to be the residential place of the master of the caves; the next ten caves are Buddhist viharas with one cave contains the Chaitya hall. The rest seven caves are adorned with inscriptions including the details of the donor. A water fall is also located at the last of the caves.

Bhairavnath Temple

Bhairavnath Temple is an ancient shrine, situated in a densely forested area near Lonavala, the temple displays architecture and design similar to that of the other Shiva temples in Konkan region. This temple is dedicated to Lord Bhairava, who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva, according to Hindu mythology. Resembling other Shiva shrines of the Konkan region, it has a simple architecture. Smaller temples of other Hindu deities are present within the compound. Mahashivratri, the main festival related to Lord Shiva, is the time when this temple is frequented by several devotees.
